24/10/2011 Black History Month Ends in SunshineThe Sunshine Circle, a group of African and Caribbean older people, entertained visitors at the Whitehill Resource Centre in Reddish. Stockport Council and Individual Solutions SK hosted the event to celebrate Black History Month. The Sunshine Circle sang popular hymns and songs from the Caribbean. Visitors sampled food freshly prepared by women from the Asian Heritage Centre. There was a real carnival feel to the day and visitors enthusiastically shared their stories and learnt more about the experiences of people from other ethnic cultures. Councillor John Pantall, Executive Member for Adults & Health said: "Stockport Council recognises and values the diversity of all its residents. I am delighted we continue to celebrate Black History Month. Having an annual event like this helps to raise awareness of the positive contributions made by different communities to the cultural development of Stockport”. The group meet on Wednesdays. For more information phone 07901 848504. Whitehill Resource Centre plays an important role in the lives of many older and vulnerable people in Stockport. It provides a range of support services aimed at promoting health and wellbeing including help with personal care and exercise.
