SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE/CRITERIA DECISION
The late19th century shop has a good exterior, which is a good example of the Cheshire black and white timber-framing style, and contributes to the street scene.

HISTORIC ASSET DESCRIPTION
The 3-storey shop and office building was constructed in the early 19th century, and re-fronted in 1888 in mock timber-framing, with curved or herringbone bracing. The front elevation is articulated into five unequal bays, with the two larger bays expressed by ground or first floor oriels and gables with moulded beams and barge boards. The ground floor has 20th century shop-fronts. The recessed central doorway has a 20th century door. The first floor has timber casements with decorative leaded upper lights, the second floor windows are similar, but without the leaded decoration. The right hand gable has a relief plaster panel with the date 1888.

The left return has been re-constructed in brick during the late 20th century. The rear of the building is of two builds; the deeper 6-bay range to the left appears to be late 18th century. The narrow range to the right has been partly re-built in the late 20th century, but retains some earlier century brickwork.

In c.1900 the shop was occupied by Chattertons, a drapers and costumiers.
